We are, once again, in discussion and contemplation over naming our baby boy. Because, as stated previously, we knew we would face some opposition in our choice of names. But we really did not anticipate such a broad rejection of our choice. It seems that both of our families simply do not like our pick, the name- Mercer. And so, names are being tossed out left and right to take into consideration. And so we contemplate.

This comes to mind...

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet." -Juliet

Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare

And then, my Anne loving self thinks of this...

"...Well, I don't know. I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but I was never able to believe it. A rose just couldn't smell as sweet if it was a thistle or a skunk-cabbage." -Anne

Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery

And so I feel torn. Do we stick with what we like? Or do we take into consideration our entire family urging us to choose something different? Just how much of a hippie rebel can one be?

The other night, when enjoying the company of family at the Christmas Parade, "Auntie" spied the name Enzo. She threw it out there into the names swirling around these days. And I knew, immediately, that the Mr. would love it. For several reasons. But to me, the name sounds cool. That's it. It doesn't really have meaning behind it. The given meaning, ruler of the home, isn't quite what we were looking for. Yet, the given meaning behind Mercer, isn't either. Of course, as stated previously, more comes to mind when seeing/saying the name Mercer. And what comes to mind for the name Enzo... red hot Ferrari's and a movie character about deep sea diving. Yet, these are a few of my husband's favorite things.

And so it boils down to this...

Enzo Isami (Isami is the Mr.'s grandfather's name)
or
Mercer Scot (Scot is the Mr.'s name)

And we continue to contemplate.

It should be noted that when naming our last son, Ezra... the Mr. told me that he threw the name Enzo out there and I immediately rejected it. I have no memory of this. I do like the name now. And I think it sounds good with the boys' names. Yet, Mercer still weighs heavier on my heart. But I'm pretty sure that Enzo is the Mr.'s first choice now. Although we both like each name. For different reasons. Torn. So torn.

I vote for Mercer Scot Naraki!
Enzo is too much like Ezra; I would just get them confused:)

I vote for Mercer Scot. It's distinguished and, as you stated previously, invokes lovely thoughts. As a girl whose sister's name is quite similar, I would vote against Enzo, especially so close in age. Teachers will mix it up. Friends and family will mix it up. You and Scot will mix it up. It's inevitable. We are not always thinking slowly and carefully. Countless times, you will hear, "Enzo? Ezra? Ezzo? Enra? Whoever you are...come here!" Not cool. Enzo is a lovely name, though, so I honestly support either one.

I also gotta say that I am always troubled by the fact that folks feel they are free to comment on name choices of their loved ones. Naming is deeply a personal act of mother and father in our culture, I believe, and you should really go with your strongest inclination. I received some commentary on Emme's name while pregnant and had to stand my ground. Today, she just wouldn't be as sweet by any other name and everybody knows it and is over it:)

I love them both. Every child becomes their name and all the friends or family who at first objected will never even remember not liking the name. I say take both names to the hospital and look at your new baby boy then give him his name. So excited for you.
